Falls Road 'tactical stop' by PSNI after car drives 'erratically' on both sides of road

Footage shared online has showed a car being driven recklessly in West Belfast before being brought to a stop by a PSNI Land Rover.

The video, taken just before 9pm on Sunday February 13, shows a blue MG driving on both sides of the Falls Road, in West Belfast performing "donuts" at each end.

A group of "young people" stood on the footpath as the car tried to avoid a police vehicle approaching.

Two men made off from the car after it was stopped by police and officers have now issued an appeal to the public.

In a statement to Belfast Live on Tuesday, a PSNI spokesperson said: "Police received a report of a suspected stolen motorbike that was driving erratically on the Albert Street area of West Belfast shortly before 6:40pm on Sunday February 13.

"Upon police arrival, the motorbike made off and a group of young people were moved out of the Albert Street area. Shortly after a second motorbike, which may also have been stolen, appeared in the area along with the group of young people.

"At around 8:50pm, it was reported that a blue coloured MG car passed police at the Servia Street area and failed to stopped for police at the Albert Street area. The vehicle is believed to have caused damage to a red coloured Peugeot 308 parked on the Falls Road area earlier in the evening.

"The vehicle then began driving erratically on the Falls Road before police made a tactical stop, due to the danger to other road users and the local community. The two males then made off from the car, which was taken away from the area by police. There was no reports of any damage to the police vehicle during the incident, and the crowd of young people dispersed a short time afterwards.

"It is believed that one of the motorbikes was recovered on Monday February 14 in the West Belfast area, while the other motorbike is still outstanding."

Inspector Irwin said police enquiries are continuing and appealed to anyone with any information in relation to the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1417 13/02/22.

“Reports of anti-social driving whether in stolen, uninsured, unregistered or even insured vehicles, should not and will not be tolerated," Inspector Irwin added.

"The drivers of these vehicles offer absolutely nothing but destruction and potential injury or death, not only to themselves, but to innocent people who may be unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Be under no illusion, the people responsible for this type of activity have no thought whatsoever for anyone or for the consequences of their actions, which are reckless in the extreme.

"A report can be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org."
