Three years ago, Amazon Studios announced it was working with Bethesda to bring the post-apocalyptic RPG series Fallout to living rooms in the form of a TV series.
After three years of near silence on the project, we now have both a setting and a rough release window for the show.
It turns out that it will be set in Vault 33 — a nuclear fallout shelter in Los Angeles. And we’ll find out what goes on within and beyond it at some point next year.

Alongside this tweet, attendees at Bethesda’s Starfield presentation at Gamescom were also treated to a short one-minute Fallout teaser trailer, which has subsequently leaked online.
The footage shows aspects of the Fallout universe brought to life, including the RPG’s iconic troops in Power Armour, the cog-like metal gates shielding the underground vaults from the wasteland, a ghoul in a hat, and a Vertibird aircraft taking off.
While the trailer doesn’t reveal much, we do know that the adaptation is written and developed by Jonathan Nolan — the brother of Christopher — and Lisa Joy, who were previously responsible for the popular TV adaptation of Westworld.
Even if it’s released at the very end of 2024, it’s still extremely likely to be the next official release for the Fallout universe.
Developer Bethesda — now owned by Microsoft — is just wrapping up work on its spacefaring RPG Starfield, coming September 6, and after that, it’s full speed ahead for the next instalment in the Elder Scrolls series which likely won’t drop until 2028 at the earliest.
In other words — unless Microsoft decides to farm the Fallout licence to another studio or the TV series is enough of a megahit for Bethesda to change priorities — it doesn’t look like we’ll see Fallout 5 this decade.
Thankfully, the modding community is on the case, and planned conversions intriguingly include a version set on this side of the Atlantic in London, due later this year.
