Bethesda has confirmed that "Fallout 76" is getting a next-gen update for consoles, which will arrive alongside the next major seasonal content release.
The announcement brings improved performance and visual upgrades to a game that has undergone a significant transformation since its rocky launch in 2018.
'Fallout 76' Next-Gen Update Is Coming From Bethesda
Bethesda shared the announcement on their official X account, detailing that the update will roll out on September 15, arriving at the same time as Season 26, titled "Beware the Blood Moon."
The Gen 9 boost, as Bethesda is calling it, is designed to bring meaningful technical improvements to console players who have been running the same base optimization since launch.
"Along with this content, our Gen 9 boost that benefits players on XBOX Series S/X, PS5, and older consoles will arrive," Bethesda said in its announcement. "All console players will enjoy better performance, stability, and visual fidelity. This upgrade also affords our team the opportunity to optimize each platform individually down the road."
A community manager for the game also confirmed on the official subreddit that a Public Test Server period for the update will run on consoles in the coming weeks ahead of the full release. However, no specific date for that test window has been shared yet.

What to Expect 'Fallout 76' on PS5, Xbox Series S/X
"Fallout 76" has come a long way since its widely criticized 2018 debut, growing into the primary mainline "Fallout" experience over the past eight years while Bethesda focused development resources elsewhere.
Major content expansions like "Skyline Valley" and "Burning Springs" have steadily grown the map, with "Burning Springs" notably adding the Ghoul character from the "Fallout" Amazon Prime series into the game itself. Players can even become a ghoul within "Fallout 76," giving them a new way to experience the Appalachian wasteland.
The Gen 9 boost specifically targets performance and stability across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and older consoles, giving Bethesda a foundation to fine-tune each platform separately going forward rather than relying on a shared baseline.
For a live service game nearing its eighth year, the timing lines up with Bethesda's continued investment in keeping "Fallout 76" competitive on current hardware.
'Fallout 76' Season 26 Details Revealed
"Beware the Blood Moon" brings a new feature called The Slasher, described as a first-of-its-kind experience within the season. Players will investigate a mystery unfolding over several weeks, gathering clues and fighting off fanatics while tracking down the creature terrorizing the wasteland.
Defeating The Slasher rewards players with a unique set of Power Armor and a new weapon called the "Super Slasher."
Bethesda also confirmed the return of Legacy Seasons, which let players catch up on rewards from seasons they may have missed. Each new season going forward will run alongside a Legacy Season using the same shared pool of tickets.
For Season 26, the Legacy Season will be "Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel," originally released back in September 2020.
Looking further ahead, Bethesda has confirmed that "Fallout 76" will receive a major expansion centered on Raven Rock, the underground bunker from "Fallout 3." The expansion is being positioned as a prequel story tied to the upcoming "Fallout 3" remaster, though no release date has been set for that content yet.
