Falkland Islands: More than a dozen dead after fishing boat disaster

The death toll has risen to 13 after a fishing vessel sank off the Falkland Islands on Monday, with four crew members still missing and presumed dead.

The Argos Georgia, a Saint Helena-flagged vessel owned by Norwegian company Ervik Havfiske Holding, went down about 200 nautical miles east of Stanley, the Falklands' capital.

The ship carried a crew of 27 from Spain, Russia, Indonesia, Peru and Uruguay.

The search for survivors was suspended on Wednesday due to severe weather conditions.

Stig Ervik, CEO of Ervik Havfiske Holding, told Reuters: "We're really sad for these families who have lost their fathers and husbands."

He confirmed that the company had contacted the next of kin of those feared dead.

Of the 27 crew members, 14 were rescued, while nine bodies were recovered. The remaining four are still unaccounted for, with hopes of finding them alive diminishing.

One person is receiving minor treatment at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley, while 12 others have been discharged and are staying at a local hotel.

The final survivor, rescued by a trawler, was expected to return to Stanley on Thursday.

The Falkland Islands government has said that efforts to recover the missing crew members will resume once weather conditions improve.
