Falkirk schoolgirl raises £1,400 climbing Arthur's Seat to support Ukraine

A nine-year-old girl has raised over £1,400 to support crisis work in Ukraine after climbing Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.

Ellie Muir, from Falkirk, came up with the idea of the ascent after watching news coverage of the Russian invasion, to the surprise and delight of mum Keri.

The pair made the ascent of the 251m (823ft) hill on Saturday and have raised £1,425 for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal - more than seven times Ellie's already ambitious target of £200.

Speaking to Falkirk Live mum Keri, 36, said she was "unbelievably proud" of her daughter for completing the walk and for wanting to help those less fortunate.

She said: "Ellie's been following everything happening in Ukraine and wanted to do something to help.

"We set the target at £200 but never thought we'd even reach that. Between GoFundMe donations and sponsorship sheets we've raised £1,425.

"The climb definitely wasn't easy. It's old volcanic rock so it's quite uneven and very slippy.

"But there were hundreds of people there on Saturday and she made it to the top by herself."

Keri shared a picture with followers of her GoFundMe page showing a beaming Ellie at the summit after finishing the climb.

The cash will go towards helping some of the 4.3 million children that have been displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to Unicef estimates.

Despite making the ascent and walking back down, the mum says her daughter was straight on the trampoline when she got home.

She added: "I'm so proud of her. She understands that there's other kids out there who have been left with absolutely nothing.

"They've had to leave their houses, leave their families and come to a different country.

"She's chuffed with herself and it was such a lovely day."

Keri has left the GoFundMe page open for additional donations for the rest of the week.
