Falkirk area school kids encouraged to write 'Letters Of Kindness' for the people of Ukraine

School kids across Falkirk are being encouraged to write a letter of kindness to the people fleeing war-torn Ukraine.

The idea has been created by a man, who at first, was taking clothes donations for those most in need.

Tom Dodd ended up with 5,000 bags of clothing and other items - including 12 hand knitted hat and scarf sets - which were donated by a 91-year-old woman.

It was then a school contacted Tom and asked what they could do to help, so he came up with the idea of writing a letter of kindness.

He was worried that not every parent might be able to afford to donate items to his clothing bank.

Tom is going to travel to Poland to personally deliver items from his collection and the letters.

Speaking to Falkirk Live, he said: "I started by organising collections for clothing and essential items at 17 locations around the country - within a few hours I had over 5,000 bags of clothing and thousands of other items.

"I was mind blown, people really wanted to help.

"I had a 90 year old lady that turned up with 12 hand knitted hat and scarf sets for children - she said she started them as soon as she heard about the war.

"What a beautiful soul.

"A school from Dartford then got in touch explaining they really wanted to do something to help but didn’t want to ask parents for money because as a school they always seemed to be asking for money in one way or another.

"After that phone call I had a little think about what we could get students to do and that’s when "Letters Of Kindness" was born.

"It’s a really engaging way of getting students to open up conversation in the classroom and I have no doubt their words will help those caught up in the plight of Ukraine.

"So many schools have been in touch saying they had been struggling to find a way to approach the topic in the classroom and this would be perfect for them.

"This ideas isn’t just for schools if for those that want to put pen to paper, express some thoughts and share some kind thoughts.

"Some people don’t have clothes to give, money to donate so hopefully just by spending a small amount on postage they and contribute.

"I’ve been truly overwhelmed by the response to both campaigns so far.

"I’m heading over to the Ukrainian/Polish border at the end of next week to deliver the items from the collections and the letters."
