Fake electricals go up in smoke

More than 33,000 electrical appliances worth about 4.68 million baht were seized from a warehouse in Samut Sakhon after authorities found products carrying fake Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) certification, Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said on Sunday.

The inspection in Krathum Baen district followed a complaint from a licensed importer that its TISI permit had been misused to bring regulated goods into the country for sale online.

A total of 33,383 items — including electric cooking pots, stoves, extension cords, power strips, adapters and hair dryers — were confiscated.

The products either lacked TISI certification or displayed it without authorisation. The operator faces charges for importing and selling substandard products and for unauthorised use of the certification, offences that carry possible jail terms and fines.

Mr Varawut warned that substandard electrical goods pose serious risks to consumers’ safety and said he had ordered a crackdown on hazardous items, particularly power banks and extension cords.
