Faith school in west London fined £45,000 for hiring illegal worker

A faith school in west London is among dozens of London bodies fined for hiring illegal workers.

Between 1 October 2025 and 31 December 2025, 67 organisations were slapped with penalties by the Home Office, totalling £3.71 million.

The Eden School in West Drayton was hit with a penalty of £45,000, according to government data.

The co-educational independent faith school had received a “good” rating in its 2026 Ofsted inspection - after a 2023 inspection ruled the school’s safeguarding arrangements were “not effective”.

The mixed school, which opened in 1995, has a capacity of just 100 students aged between 2-18. As of June, the school had just 30 students on roll.

The school has been approached for comment.

The Home Office has been cracking down on businesses that have employed people with no right to work in the UK.

The majority of these businesses (33) were restaurants, while nail bars, construction firms, barber shops, and off-licences were also issued penalties.

The biggest fines of £135,000 were handed to Pakistani restaurant Lahore One in Whitechapel and a north London branch of Turkish bakery wholesaler Basak Bakery.

Both businesses have been approached by The Standard for comment.

Firms can be fined up to £45,000 per employee without the right to work. The penalty was tripled in 2024 from £15,000 per worker.

For repeat breaches, businesses can be fined a maximum of £60,000 per worker.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Illegal working undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages, and fuels organised immigration crime. This government will not stand for it.

“Since coming into power, we have increased Immigration Enforcement action to the highest level in British history. This has delivered an 83% rise in illegal working arrests and 77% rise in raids.”
