The warm summer months make us all feel a little restless and when it comes to entertaining the family over the holidays it's always good to have a little inspiration.
Recent data for UK holidaymakers has revealed that Scotland is this summer’s must-visit destination, with beaches, countryside and historical landmarks just some of the attractions the country has to offer travellers.
To help with ideas of the best places to go, Verdant Leisure asked travel expert Francesca Houldsworth to pick out some of her hidden gems and one fairytale castle perched on a clifftop just an hour south of Glasgow was her top pick.

Speaking about the stunning Culzean Castle in Ayrshire, she said: “On the west coast of Scotland, Culzean Castle is a must-see for architecture fanatics and historians alike. Built in the 16th century, this property has a haunted past and is rumoured to be home to several paranormal residents. The castle is perched on the top of a cliff so not only boasts spectacular architecture, but stunning views and gardens.”
And for Glaswegians who may already have heard of it, it's well worth checking out, as not only is it beautiful to see in person, there is also plenty of things to see and do.
Scooping five stars last year from Which? Magazine for its facilities and how well the description matched the reality of the experience on offer.
The castle has rich historical links and was even a favourite of former US president and army general Dwight D Eisenhower, who chose the site as his Scottish holiday home.
A frequent visitor, he often spent time there with his family and friends.
Overlooking the Firth of Clyde from its cliff-top location close to the town of Maybole, the castle was originally built in the late 18th century at the bequest of David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassilis.
It's now run by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) and is hugely popular with families and history lovers visiting the area.
The castle itself is home to architectural wonders such as the sweeping Oval Staircase, while outside you'll find the stunning Walled Garden.
Things to do
The charity have spent over £500,000 on a raft of improvements at the castle, including several wonderful new family attractions.
These include the playground for younger children, Adventure Cove, and the adventure playpark for older children, the Wild Woodland, while the 120 hectares of mixed woodland of the country park is where you'll find the Swan Pond and Deer Park - home to a small herd of deer and llamas
The Home Farm Kitchen and Swan Pond Ice Cream Parlour are the ideal spots to refuel and for warmer days there's also the nearby beach that's ideal for rockpooling.
