MENLO PARK, California — Facebook app owner Meta Platforms has decided to chop thousands of jobs in the Bay Area, a fresh round of painful tech layoffs that will jolt five cities in this region, state labor officials report.
All told, the owner of the Facebook app disclosed plans to jettison 2,564 jobs in the Bay Area, according to official notices sent to the state’s Employment Development Department.
The tech titan’s job cuts will affect workers in Menlo Park — Meta’s hometown and world headquarters and by far the hardest hit — as well as Meta Platforms employees in Sunnyvale, Fremont, Burlingame and San Francisco.
The layoffs are poised to raise red flags about the pace and outcome of the Bay Area’s years-long struggle to recover from its mammoth job losses during the first two months of the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020 and April 2020. The once-robust region has yet to regain those lost jobs.
Statewide, the Facebook owner has decided to terminate more than 2,700 positions, including the layoffs in Los Angeles.
Here’s how many people will be laid off in the six California cities affected by the job cuts, according to the WARN letters:
—1,642 in several locations in Menlo Park, including at the tech titan’s headquarters at the Hacker Way complex.
—362 in San Francisco.
—237 in Sunnyvale.
—179 in Burlingame
—144 in several Fremont locations, all in the East Bay city’s tech-heavy Ardenwood district.
The corporate behemoth also plans to chop 162 jobs in Los Angeles, the WARN letters show.
The job cuts are all expected to begin by mid-January of 2023 and will be completed by early February of next year, according to the WARN letters to the EDD.
The Menlo Park layoffs will affect these locations: 1, 10, 12, 15, and 17 Hacker Way; 915 through 955 Hamilton Ave.; 960 Hamilton Ave.; 965 Hamilton Ave.; 1150 Hamilton Ct.; 1350 Willow Rd.; 105, 135 and 260 Constitution Drive; 162 and 200 Jefferson Dr.
The Sunnyvale job cuts will take place at 900 and 1180 Discovery Way.
The Fremont cutbacks will occur at 34760 Campus Drive, 6422 Commerce Drive, 6591 Dumbarton Circle, 6700 Dumbarton Circle, 6504 and 6552 Kaiser Drive; and 6530 Paseo Padre Parkway.
The Burlingame terminations will affect 311, 312, 322 and 333 Airport Blvd.
The San Francisco job cuts will occur at 250 Howard St.
“Affected employees will continue to receive any pay and benefits due to them as a Meta employee, up until the termination of their employment,” the corporate behemoth stated in one of the six WARN notices it sent to the state EDD.
