Facebook, Instagram global outrage: Indian Twitterati kick up meme-fest linking crash to Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant's pre-wedding posts

Indian Twitterati seem convinced that the extravagant Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant pre-wedding celebrations broke the internet!

On Monday night, a global outage affecting Facebook, Instagram, Meta and Messenger drove social media users to Twitter to find out the cause of the rather unusual outrage. According to reports, many users claimed that they were locked out of their accounts, prompting panic.

Shortly after word spread about the outrage, Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a post on X, "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."

The sites seemed to return to normal, about two hours after the outage reports first emerged.

At the height of the problem on Tuesday, Facebook's status page, intended for advertisers, said the site was suffering "major disruptions" and that "engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."

X, formerly Twitter, saw a spike in online activity as users were locked out of the Meta sites. Indian Twitterati made the most of the crash and had a field day posting memes linking it to the flood of Ambani pre-wedding posts.

"Zuckerberg came back from the Ambani wedding & has had enough of it so he shut instagram down for a while. I get him," quipped a user.

Another shared a viral clip of Mark Zuckerberg admiring the groom-to-be Anant's luxury watch and joked, "The root of the whole problem is this watch!"

Another said, "Anant Ambani should immediately send this watch to Zuckerberg."

Another posted an open letter to the billionaire with a request, "Dear Anant Ambani, pls gift your watch to Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook & Instagram is down because of that."

Others jokingly speculated that the sheer magnitude of the pre-wedding posts might have overloaded Facebook and Instagram servers, leading to the unprecedented crash. While the outage itself caused frustration and inconvenience for users worldwide, the response from Indian Twitter users added a light-hearted touch to the situation, with many netizens drawing tongue-in-cheek connections.

See what they had to say in the tweets below:

The pre-wedding festivities of Anant and Radhika had already captured significant attention on social media platforms, with images and videos from the extravagant affair circulating widely. The couple will tie the knot on July 12.
