Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has said Manchester United is interested in talented left-back Diego Leon. The Red Devils are actively negotiating with Cerro Porteno to secure the 17-year-old’s services.
Manchester United Wants to Sign 17-Year-Old Paraguayan
Record 20-time English champions Manchester United are going through a difficult patch. Currently under Ruben Amorim, they are in 13th place in the Premier League rankings and 12th in the UEFA Europa League standings. The Portuguese tactician has said the Mancunians will need to be patient and reinvent themselves to recapture their glory days.
Manchester United need to sign players that fit in Amorim’s system, and according to Romano, they are set to begin their recruitment drive with a highly rated 17-year-old left-back.
Taking to his channel on X (formerly Twitter), the Italian journalist wrote:
“Manchester United are in active talks with Cerro Porteno for 17 year old left back Diego León as talent for the future.
“Similar to Sekou Kone deal last summer, Man Utd keep looking at talents from abroad and a $4m deal is being discussed also with Leon’s agents.”
Who Is Diego Leon?
Just 17 years of age, Leon is one of the most highly rated U18 talents in South America. The left-back is exceptionally quick, is great in one-on-one duels, and has admirable physical attributes. In addition to being a technically sound defender, Leon is also quite a handful in the opposition third, making him an invaluable asset to Cerro Porteno.
Shedding light on his quality, Paraguayan football expert Roberto Rojas told Transfermarkt:
“He’s a player with a lot of promise, who happened to make this big jump into the first team at Cerro Porteno so quickly.
“As someone coming from a remote place (Yguazu, in Alto Paraná which is roughly 300 km from the capital Asuncion) and growing up in difficult circumstances, León has proven to be someone who can surpass that adversity to get to where he’s been. He’s definitely viewed highly because of his talent and recent performances for one of the biggest clubs in the country and occupying that left flank as a full-back has allowed him to be someone who can go onto the attack, start playing from the back, and also be versatile.”
Leon has so far played 19 games for Cerro Porteno in the Paraguayan top flight, scoring two goals.
