James Maddison's contract situation at Leicester City may mean that his time at the King Power Stadium comes to an end in 2023. Excelling for the Foxes since joining from Norwich City in the summer of 2018, the England international will soon be entering the final 18 months of his deal.
Heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Newcastle United in recent months, the 26-year-old has also been mentioned regarding a switch to Tottenham Hotspur. It's not hard to see why after an incredible calendar year, which has seen him nominated as one of nine players in the running for the 2022 Fans' Footballer of the Year award.
Finishing the 2021/22 campaign with 18 goals and 12 assists from his 53 games in all competitions, Maddison really stepped it up in the second part of the season with 11 goals and five assists as the Foxes finished strongly. Taking his brilliant form into the current campaign, Maddison had three goal involvements in his first three Premier League games and then produced when it mattered most with two goals and an assist in a crucial game at home to Nottingham Forest with Brendan Rodgers' job on the line.

Netting a fantastic strike against Tottenham prior to that, the ex-Coventry City man was also on the scoresheet against the Lilywhites at the King Power Stadium back in January in an encounter that will always be remembered for Steven Bergwijn's late double. Antonio Conte and Spurs know first hand just how good a player Maddison is, thus explaining why fans are so keen for the club to launch a move for the attacking ace.
If indeed Tottenham are to look at luring the player to the capital, Maddison's contract situation could potentially allow Fabio Paratici to strike a cut-price deal for the ace. Out of contract in the summer of 2024, a player's transfer value does start to decrease once they enter the final 18 months of their deal, thus enabling interested clubs to save a few million in the process.
His transfer fee would drop even further if he still remains at Leicester come next summer and goes into the final year of his contract. Not only a chance for Paratici to sign a top quality player and save Daniel Levy and Spurs some money at the same time, the addition of Maddison would also help fix one of Conte's biggest issues at Tottenham.
The recent absence of Dejan Kulusevski through injury not only highlighted his importance to the team but also that Spurs do not have an alternative option who can be their creative outlet when he is missing. Many Spurs fans continue to point out that the club have lacked creativity in the squad ever since Christian Eriksen departed for Inter Milan almost three years ago.
Maddison would be someone who could step up the mantle and help Harry Kane and Son Heung-min thrive, especially after showing in 2022 his eye for an assist after registering nine. Tending to operate for Leicester at present on the right of a four behind the striker, the majority of Maddison's football throughout his career has come in the attacking midfielder role but he has also played off the left.
Wherever he has played for Leicester, Norwich City or Coventry City in the past, he has always contributed in the final third with goals and assists. The potential addition of Maddison would also give Conte the option to play a 3-5-2 system that we have seen on a couple of occasions and play him as an attacking midfielder behind Kane and Son.
There are many benefits to Tottenham launching a move for Maddison, with his form over the past year proving that he is one of the Premier League's best and that he would be a fantastic asset for any club. Now needing to add some real quality to the team to help Tottenham go up a level or two, the 2022 Fans' Footballer of the Year nominee would do just that.
