Fabian Schar bans Carabao Cup final talk ahead of Newcastle United's vital game against West Ham

Fabian Schar has lived in Newcastle long enough to realise how much reaching the Carabao Cup final meant this week.

But he is also wary of United getting ahead of themselves and has warned that nobody should even contemplate thinking of Wembley while there are three huge Premier League fixtures still to be played. Schar would love to pick up a winners medal against Manchester United but is eager to get back to the bread and butter of life in the top-flight - starting with West Ham.

Schar told Chronicle Live: "Yes we must. It will be tough against West Ham they are probably not in the place where they want to be. They are going to fight for everything. So we know how the Premier League is. We know what we want to achieve and need to be ready for this game - 100 per cent."

Victory for Newcastle will help bolster their top four position but there could also be a chance to close the gap on leaders Arsenal to just eight points. The Switzerland international centre-back, however, does not want to think too far ahead when it comes to having a say in the title race.

Schar reflected: "I am just hungry for the next game. We will see what the end of the season brings but I am not thinking too far forward and there are still many games to play.

"We know how quickly it can change. I am honestly focused game by game and the next one is Saturday. We have another game against West Ham and have to be ready. We have something to achieve there as well.

"We can enjoy the moment but from Thursday we moved straight to the next game and on to the next challenge."

Schar and his team-mates celebrated a big win over Southampton in the semi-finals of the 63-year-old competition that Newcastle have never won. But the defender says it is merely a reflection on how far the club have come in a short space of time.

The ex-Hoffenheim defender Schar said: "It's all about that magic moment in football. I have been here four and a half years, and I had some tough moments before this. Before that for the fans it was always difficult. I just want to enjoy the moment now and where we are.

"We can see how we have improved as a club around the stadium and in the team, and the dressing room. It is something the city deserves."

United reached their first final showpiece in 24 years and Schar, who signed for Newcastle in 2018, does not need reminding about the trophy drought on Tyneside.

Schar added: "It's been a long time since 1999 when they last reached a final. And longer since they won a trophy. I think everybody was tired because the game was tough.

"At 2-0 up on the night you think it'll be easy but it's never going to be like that and we had to fight until the last minutes. We will realise it more in the next few days. "It's just exciting to go to Wembley.

"I have been here a while so I know how it feels. When you see videos and stuff it's just crazy what it meant for them and I am so happy to be part of it."
