FA set to review incident at Emirates Stadium during Liverpool defeat to Arsenal

The Football Association are weighing up a potential investigation following an incident during Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

In a short statement released on Sunday evening, the FA say they are “aware of an incident” during the game at the Emirates as the Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League.

The governing body have refused to divulge any further information at this stage as they assess the evidence of the particular moment in question.

It’s unclear at this stage exactly what the flashpoint centres around but referee Michael Oliver did speak to both Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta on the sidelines during the closing stages.

One possible explanation is an ill-tempered clash between the two sets of players when Arsenal were awarded a controversial penalty after Gabriel Jesus had gone down as Thiago Alcantara tried to clear his lines with 15 minutes to go.

Anfield sources have indicated that a process is underway and say the club will follow the procedure to the letter should any investigation begin.

Arsenal have refused to comment on the situation as it’s now in the hands of the FA.

Both managers were also believed to have been spoken to at the final whistle and the matter has now been referred to the FA, who may offer what their next steps are on Monday.

An FA Spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident."

Gabriel Martinelli gave the hosts the lead after 57 seconds before Darwin Nunez struck a leveller after good work from Luis Diaz.

Bukayo Saka made it 2-1 in the fifth minute of stoppage time before Roberto Firmino fired home another Liverpool response in the second period.

After Saka dispatched the penalty for 3-2, however, there was to be no third equaliser of the game for Klopp’s side as they suffered their second defeat of their league campaign.
