Either Manchester City or Manchester United will bank just £3.9m for beating their cross-city rivals at Wembley in the FA Cup final.
And while that will not matter to the thousands of supporters who witness the first all-Manchester final, the gap in prize money compared to the league and Champions League illustrates why the majority of top clubs no longer prioritise the game’s oldest knockout competition.
In total the FA Cup ’s prize fund is worth a touch less than £20m - beginning with £375 for losers in the extra preliminary round. But that does not include broadcasting income and gate receipts, which sees both clubs receive 45% each and the remaining 10% going to the association.
Yet those sums pale in comparison to the big two competitions.
City banked more than £170m for their fifth Premier League title in six years and will earn another £100m if they beat Inter Milan in next weekend’s Champions League final.
United, meanwhile, made about £160m for their third-place finish in the league - but only received £100,000 for beating Newcastle in February’s EFL Cup final.
