England's national football team will not play against Russia "for the foreseeable future" in response to the invasion of Ukraine, the FA has announced - while Russia must play ‘home’ matches on neutral territory with no fans, flag or anthem and under the name ‘Football Union of Russia (RFU)’ until further notice, FIFA has said.
The Football Association's statement tonight (Sunday, February 26) came in the wake of announcements by the football associations of Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic – all future or potential opponents of Russia in World Cup qualifiers– that they will refuse to play Russia at any venue.
The FA said: “Out of solidarity with Ukraine and to wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership, the FA can confirm that we won’t play against Russia in any international fixtures for the foreseeable future.
