Ollie Bearman crash - latest: FIA release statement after 191mph shunt in Japan

Ollie Bearman crashed out of the Japanese Grand Prix (Hiro Komae/AP) - (AP)

British driver Ollie Bearman limped into a medical car following a 190mph crash in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix.

Bearman lost control of his Haas at high speed as he attempted an aggressive pass on Alpine’s Franco Colapinto for 15th at the Spoon Curve in Suzuka on the 22nd lap.

Bearman ended up on the grass on the left-hand side of the circuit before crashing through multiple polystyrene distance boards and ending up in the barrier. The 20-year-old, in just his second season in Formula One, emerged from his destroyed car but was unable to put any weight on his right leg.

He was assisted away from his Haas by two marshals before he slumped to the floor. Bearman was then taken away in a car to the on-track medial centre for X-rays. A Haas spokesperson said: “Update on Bearman. 50G impact. Has had an X-ray at the Medical Centre. No fractures. A right knee contusion following the impact. Alert and communicating.”

Comment: Ollie Bearman’s 191mph crash is a tipping point – F1 must tweak 2026 regulations

11:29 , Kieran Jackson

In more ways than one, it was a game-changer. The incident that flipped Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix on its head, to the delight of the race winner and the despair of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, means we have a new championship leader in 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli. Yet the long-term connotations, for the 22 drivers and for Formula 1’s new era, will be of greater significance.

Ollie Bearman’s thunderous crash on lap 22 at Suzuka was, to put it in simplistic F1 colloquialisms, a “big one.” An impact with the tyre barrier measured at 50G – similar to Max Verstappen’s 2021 shunt at Silverstone – saw the 20-year-old limp away from his cockpit with the assistance of trackside marshals. When his car skated off track, his Haas VF-26 was doing an enormous 191mph.

Reminder: FIA statement

20:00 , Kieran Jackson

“Following the accident involving Oliver Bearman at the Japanese Grand Prix and the contribution of high closing speeds in the accident, the FIA would like to provide the following clarifications.

“Since their introduction, the 2026 regulations have been the subject of ongoing discussions between the FIA, Teams, Power Unit Manufacturers, Drivers and FOM. By design, these regulations include a number of adjustable parameters, particularly in relation to energy management, which allow for optimisation based on real-world data.

“It has been the consistent position of all stakeholders that a structured review would take place after the opening phase of the season, to allow for sufficient data to be gathered and analysed. A number of meetings are therefore scheduled in April to assess the operation of the new regulations and to determine whether any refinements are required.

“Any potential adjustments, particularly those related to energy management, require careful simulation and detailed analysis. The FIA will continue to work in close and constructive collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcome for the sport and safety will always remain a core element of the FIA’s mission. At this stage, any speculation regarding the nature of potential changes would be premature. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”

Lewis Hamilton, who finished P6:

19:00 , Kieran Jackson

“It was a demanding race, and clearly not the result I wanted. My first stint went well in terms of tyre management, but I simply didn’t have the pace to compete.

“The focus now is on understanding why and finding ways to improve. With a month before the next race, we’ll use the time to analyse every detail from these first three races and make sure we come back stronger.”

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu:

17:00 , Kieran Jackson

"First and foremost, it's good that Ollie is okay. It was a big shunt and Ollie is really gutted about it.

“The closing speed was huge, it was close to 50kph, and it was a pretty scary moment, but I'm glad that he came out okay.

Mercedes' George Russell, after a disappointing P4 finish:

15:30 , Kieran Jackson

“We've had a lot of bad luck this weekend and that is unfortunate as we were definitely in the fight for the win today. After a difficult start, we'd managed to get ourselves back to P2 but stopped just one lap before the safety car was deployed.

“That changed the complexion of the race and unfortunately, after taking the restart in P3, we lost two more positions as a result firstly of hitting the harvesting limit and then an unexpected superclip.

“It was pretty frustrating but that's the way racing goes sometimes.”

George Russell (AP)

Sky F1 pundit Bernie Collins on potential rule changes after Bearman crash:

14:31 , Kieran Jackson

“I think the discussion has been central on how can we improve qualifying so there's a few ways of doing that.

“You either reduce the amount of battery that they can charge and recharge through the laps. It's more like what we had last year. That would reduce overall lap time, which is maybe not great.

“You could increase the fuel flow, is one way of doing it, so that the engine produces more of the power.

“So that would get you back much closer to the type of racing that you had last year, and not such a big difference in closing speeds, because you wouldn't need to harvest energy into the battery.”

Bearman speaks out

13:30 , Kieran Jackson

In a set of quotes provided by Haas, Bearman has revealed he is “fine” after his crash.

“First of all, everything is fine and I’m good,” said Bearman. “It was a scary moment out there but everything is okay, which is the main thing.

“The adrenaline is wearing off a bit so it’s going to be a long trip home, but I’m absolutely fine.

“The car is a bit worse for wear. I can only apologise to the team because it’s a lot of work.

“There was a massive overspeed – around 50kph – which is a part of these new regulations and we have to get used to it, but also I felt like I wasn’t given much space, given the huge excess speed I was carrying.

“We need to be a bit more lenient and a bit more prepared, as unfortunately this was the result of a massive delta speed which we’ve not seen in Formula One before.”

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu reacts:

12:46 , Kieran Jackson

Asked if his British driver had a lucky escape, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said: “Yes. It could have been a lot worse. I am just glad he did not break anything.

“We have been talking about closing speeds, and this accident has now happened so we cannot ignore it. Safety should always be top of the list.”

RACE REPORT: Russell rues bad luck as Antonelli claims second F1 win at Japanese GP

11:00 , Kieran Jackson

Kimi Antonelli knocked George Russell off the F1 world championship summit after he claimed his second win in a row at Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix.

Antonelli took advantage of a safety car period following British driver Ollie Bearman’s enormous 191mph crash in Suzuka to land a free pit-stop and leapfrog his rivals.

The Italian teenager, who landed his debut win in China a fortnight ago, took the chequered flag 13.7 seconds clear of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, while Charles Leclerc kept Russell at bay to finish third.

FIA STATEMENT:

10:25 , Kieran Jackson

“Following the accident involving Oliver Bearman at the Japanese Grand Prix and the contribution of high closing speeds in the accident, the FIA would like to provide the following clarifications.

“Since their introduction, the 2026 regulations have been the subject of ongoing discussions between the FIA, Teams, Power Unit Manufacturers, Drivers and FOM. Fernando Alonso, speaking before the Japanese GP:

10:03 , Kieran Jackson

”Overtaking these days is accidental,” Alonso said about the new regulations

“Suddenly you find yourself with a higher battery than the car in front and you either crash into them or you overtake them.

“It’s an evasive manoeuvre, not an overtake.”

Fernando Alonso (Getty)

Max Verstappen, after finishing P8:

09:25 , Kieran Jackson

Any improvement? “I don’t think it was very good, yesterday was a disaster, today I just maximised my race. The car.... just trying to hang to it in the race.

On meeting with F1: “We’ll do some more racing, some stuff that makes me smile, speak to the team and try and find more pace, a more stable balance, but this is not sustainable for us as a team We need to bring improvements.

“You can have a bad balance, that doesn’t take away from how we have to race, I’ve commented on that a few times, a lot of drivers are speaking out on it.

“That is the biggest one. I would like to win, but i can accept P7. It’s the way I’m driving with the systems and everything, is not a lot of fun.”

Carlos Sainz on Bearman's crash:

08:53 , Kieran Jackson

Some very interesting comments from Carlos Sainz on Bearman’s crash and the regulations:

“I’m excited to see what FOM [Formula One Management] and FIA come up with for the new regulations, hope they come back better for Miami.

“With the accident with Ollie, we’ve been warning them with these closing speeds that this was going to happen. Hopefully, we come up with a better solution with these massive closing speeds and a better way of racing.”

“I was so surprised when they said we will sort out qualifying and leave racing alone because it’s exciting.

“We’ve been very vocal, we’ve been warning that this kind of accident was going to happen. Here, we’re lucky there was an escape road - imagine Baku or Vegas. We’ve warned the FIA that these accidents will happen a lot with these regulations, 50G is higher than my crash in Russia in 2016, 46G.

“I hope it serves as one example, if they listen to teams and drivers... the racing is clearly not OK.”

Max Verstappen explains why he kicked out British F1 journalist: ‘He laughed in my face’

05:00 , Kieran Jackson

"But after the final race, when you ask that question and you start laughing in my face while asking the question, and it's clearly done with bad intent to ask the question at that point, it shows a massive lack of respect.

"So, for me, when you're not respectful towards me, I don't need to be respectful towards you.

“I think that's how it works in life, very straightforward, very simple. And that's why I did that. That's why I did it here on Thursday. For me, it's not correct.

"I have a lot of respect for everyone. I get asked a lot of questions, a lot of stupid questions as well, but I answer them. It's not always that a question is great or whatever, that's part of Formula 1. But this particular case, it was clearly done with bad intent.”

Jos Verstappen on Max Verstappen's current mindset:

04:00 , Kieran Jackson

"As a driver, you should be rewarded for your bravery and your skills. But if you now go through a corner as fast as possible, over the course of a lap you end up being slower. That takes away the whole racing feeling," Verstappen Snr told De Telegraaf.

"I get the impression some people just say things to stay in the spotlight. Max’s feeling in the car has nothing to do with performance.

"They should embrace how direct Max is. Or do they only want yes-men in this sport? Or drivers who say everything is great but don’t mean a word of it?”

"He used to think racing a Formula 1 car was the most beautiful thing there was. But now I have a rather bleak outlook. I wish I could say it wasn’t so, but with an eye on his future I do see this becoming a problem.”

Lando Norris, after qualifying P5:

03:00 , Kieran Jackson

“It impacted our ability to test things, also to do high fuel running for tomorrow, it’s been difficult, I’ve been playing a lot of catch-up. I don’t feel like I was on top form, made a couple of mistakes on my final lap.

“I’m happy to P5, very close to Charles, I did a good job. Could I have been better? Yes. Could have been a lot worse.

“We certainly felt better yesterday. We seemed to take a step forward in quali now. Cars are sensitive to wind etc, we’re happy with the team today.”

Ollie Bearman, who starts 18th:

"In the first run, we had a switch issue on the car and we lost time on the straights. On run two, I didn’t find any pace, so I need to understand whether there was still a small issue with the car or if it was fixed, but there are very tight margins out there and it wasn’t enough to get through today.

“It’s a shame about qualifying, but there’s still going to be plenty of opportunities in the race, I’m optimistic. If it was 12 months ago, I’d be much less so, however there’s going to be a lot of overtaking."

Fernando Alonso, who could only qualify 21st:

00:30 , Kieran Jackson

“A tough Qualifying for us today here in Suzuka. This circuit exposes our current limitations, and that was clear on track.

“Despite the Q1 exit, we have still been able to build mileage across the sessions, which is important for gathering data and understanding the car better.

“I always enjoy driving here, so tomorrow we will try to maximise everything and see what’s possible.”

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff:

“We're pleased to have taken another front-row lockout, but points are scored on Sunday.

“It will be a long race tomorrow and we know that lots can happen around a track as challenging as Suzuka.

“As a team, we are focused on doing the job tomorrow and heading into this mini break in the calendar in as strong a position as we possibly can.”

PIECE: Aston Martin and Honda: the F1 partnership that promised flair but has only seen despair

Saturday 28 March 2026 23:00 , Kieran Jackson

To say it is not the Suzuka homecoming Honda would have envisaged would be one V6 engine-sized understatement. Teaming up with Aston Martin as its new power unit provider this season, the Japanese automotive giant has endured a horrid, reputation-damaging start to the 2026 Formula One campaign.

And the blame game has already started.

Toto Wolff responds to rumours linking Max Verstappen with Mercedes move

Saturday 28 March 2026 21:30 , Kieran Jackson

"Someone said that the Max discussions will eventually come back on the table again. But no, there are not any Max discussions," he stated.

Wolff expressed unwavering confidence in his current pairing. "I could not be happier with the two drivers that we have. The positioning of the two, with the age gap and how it aligns well with our strategy, means there are not any discussions."

Adrian Newey ‘not doing well’ amid Aston Martin turmoil, says close F1 confidante

Saturday 28 March 2026 20:00 , Kieran Jackson

Adrian Newey is “not doing well” given Aston Martin’s current plight, revealed his former close confidante Helmut Marko.

Newey joined Aston a year ago after 20 years and 13 world championships at Red Bull, where he worked closely with Red Bull’s former head of driver development, Marko.

George Russell, who qualified P2:

Saturday 28 March 2026 19:00 , Kieran Jackson

“That was not a straightforward qualifying session on my side of the garage.

“We made a small and standard set-up adjustment after FP3 to balance out the car but it made it a lot more difficult to drive. I was struggling with oversteer and tyre overheating and was having to adjust my driving around that to find the lap time.

“With that challenge, ending the session P2 is not a bad result. Given how difficult overtaking usually is here at Suzuka, the start will be important. We've been working hard to improve how we get off the line and will be aiming to make sure we are the leading cars into turn one.

“That said, it will be a long race so there will be plenty of options.”

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur:

Saturday 28 March 2026 18:00 , Kieran Jackson

“At the moment, we are still going through the learning process regarding how to approach qualifying and how to improve from Q1 to Q3, without being too aggressive. It’s not just about energy management or about pure performance: it’s about how to extract the best from the car.

“That can sometimes be counterintuitive for the driver, and we will have to fully understand why we had a better Q2 than Q3. Tonight, we will focus on tomorrow’s race as it is Sunday when the points are given out. So, let’s hope we get a good start, choose the right strategy and then see what we can do.

“So far, our race pace has been solid, let’s see how many points we can score tomorrow.”

Pierre Gasly, who qualified 7th:

Saturday 28 March 2026 17:00 , Kieran Jackson

“I am very happy with P7 in Qualifying today. The team did a very good job to find a lot more performance in the car so big thanks to everyone for their hard work overnight in finding those improvements.

“Yesterday I was not feeling too happy in the car and I could not drive the way I wanted so we definitely had a lot to analyse. We made good changes overnight and it felt much better in Free Practice 3 and we made a few further tweaks ahead of Qualifying where the car felt the best it has been all weekend, so that's really pleasing. I think P7 is the best we could have realistically achieved today given where the top three teams are, so to be quite close to a Ferrari is a good effort from everyone.

“Tomorrow we will have a challenge on our hands to stay in P7 with some quick cars behind. That is our aim, though, to capitalise on our good starting spot and be on it at the start and any potential restarts. Our high fuel running looked reasonable on Friday so hopefully we can have the pace to compete for good points again.”

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella:

Saturday 28 March 2026 16:00 , Kieran Jackson

“Today was a positive step for us, with clear indications of progress in competitiveness. Oscar has been fast all season and showed it again, and Lando delivered strongly despite issues in every Practice session.

“Our improved collaboration with the Mercedes HPP engineers is helping us unlock more from this power unit, and combined with better setup work on the MCL40, we’ve been able to cash in some lap time.

A Qualifying result of P3 and P5 today reflects where we realistically are right now, fighting with Ferrari, while recognising that Mercedes remains a step ahead on pure pace. We know Ferrari tend to gain relative pace in the race, so podium contention will be hard fought, but we’ll be there to take opportunities

“We’re not blind to the areas we must improve. Reliability, particularly the recurring issues on the battery module supplied by Mercedes HPP – today's one that forced us to fit a third energy store unit in Free Practice 3 - is something we’re working to stabilise as we assess whether the second battery can be recovered.”

Kimi Antonelli after claiming pole:

Saturday 28 March 2026 15:00 , Kieran Jackson

“It feels great to take pole position today here at Suzuka. I've been having a lot of fun driving around such a brilliant circuit and pushing to the limit in qualifying.

“The car was a little snappier than it had been in FP3, so it wasn't straightforward. We had some tyre overheating which we were dealing with too, but we were able to put together two solid laps in Q3. Thankfully our pace was strong enough to take P1. I am looking forward to tomorrow.

“The start will be key, but we are just focused on ourselves and what we can do to make sure we hold the lead into turn one. We will be working on that with Bono and my other engineers this evening so we are as ready as possible.

“Hopefully we can do that, get the car in some clear air, and utilise the long run pace that we showed on Friday. Let's see what we can do.”

Lewis Hamilton doubts Ferrari’s F1 upgrades amid Mercedes dominance in Japan

Saturday 28 March 2026 14:00 , Kieran Jackson

Hamilton starts Sunday’s race in sixth.

“I don’t know if we can turn it into a podium,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “McLaren have taken a step forward and they have the Mercedes engine which is naturally a long way ahead of us.

“Even if you bring a three-tenths upgrade, it’s still a long way off. To close that gap is going to take a mighty push.”

Oscar Piastri after qualifying third:

Saturday 28 March 2026 13:00 , Kieran Jackson

“A good Qualifying session today, it was nice to be in the top three and closer to the leading team so overall we can be pretty happy with this afternoon’s result. All weekend I think we’ve looked reasonably good, and the team has executed every session well, getting things right for the moment across each day which is pleasing.

“We clearly don’t have the pace or the grip to match Mercedes still, but we’re getting closer and that’s the most important point in our on-track performance. There are plenty of positives today, and it was good to be able to qualify ahead of Ferrari too.

“We’ll now continue to work hard to make important further gains as a team overnight, working on power management and exploiting maximum performance in preparation for the race tomorrow.”

Charles Leclerc after qualifying fourth:

Saturday 28 March 2026 09:50 , Kieran Jackson

Interesting comments....

“It’s very frustrating because in Q3, you go into that last lap and you try things which are above what you’ve tried before. The system needs to reoptimise everything. I lose time in the straights, you never put a lap together, always comprimising things.

“We’re more exposed to that than the Mercedes engine. The FIA are still looking to fix those issues. Apart from that, I was very happy with my lap.

“This would be arrogant to say like that but I think for everybody, going into Q3 is not the nicest feeling, we want to be at the limit of the cars but you pay the price with a snap. Whenever you play with the limit, you get destroyed in the straights.

“You need to be under the limit, I think it’s less rewarding for the drivers who want to push over it. Usually in Q3 it pays off, but not with these cars.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff:

Saturday 28 March 2026 07:44 , Kieran Jackson

“He’s just calm, not putting himself too much under pressure. Put a banker in, then pushed it a bit hard. It’s really pleasing to see.

George: “We did a set-up tweak, it put the car on the nose, too much oversteer, was very difficult for him.

“He needs to carry this into the race.”

Oscar Piastri after qualifying P3:

Saturday 28 March 2026 07:31 , Kieran Jackson

“We clearly don’t have the pace or grip to match Mercedes.”

George Russell after qualifying P2:

Max Verstappen after only qualifying P11:

Saturday 28 March 2026 06:55 , Kieran Jackson

“The car never turns mid-corner. We oversteer a lot on entry, it’s really difficult, unpredictable, we thought we fixed it a little bit in FP3 - there’s still a lot of understeer, for me in qualifying it was undriveable.

“I’m driving with a different aero package which also wasn’t good.

“We have problems that I cannot explain in detail here, in qualifying it comes back to a point where it became undriveable.”
