F1: Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto quits after troubled 2022 season

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto will leave the F1 team at the end of the year.

Binotto’s exit had long been expected after a difficult season in which the team went from championship challengers to enduring a myriad of on-track issues.

The Italian has been made to carry the can in the aftermath of a difficult campaign and will leave on December 31 having officially resigned from the role.

Following the news on Tuesday morning, Binotto said: “With the regret that this entails, I have decided to conclude my collaboration with Ferrari.

“I am leaving a company that I love, which I have been a part of for 28 years, with the serenity that comes from the conviction that I have made every effort to achieve the objectives set.

“I leave a united and growing team. A strong team, ready, I’m sure to achieve the highest goals to which I wish all the best for the future. I think it’s right to take this step at this time as hard as this decision has been for me.”

Ferrari had begun the season with the quickest car but ended with just four grand prix victories to Red Bull’s 17 and finished way behind in both the drivers and constructors’ championships.

Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur is seen as the favourite to replace Binotto although Ross Brawn has emerged as a potential outlier for the role at his former team after stepping down from his position at F1 at the end of the season.

Ferrari said the announcement of its new team principal would be made in the new year.
