'Eyesore' former pub could be turned into Co-op

An "eyesore" former pub in Wirral could be transformed into a Co-op, local councillors have revealed.

The old Marquis pub, in Great Sutton, has lain empty for several years, and the derelict building has continued to deteriorate. Planning permission to convert the site into supported living housing was granted back in 2018, however work never got underway.

In February, Cheshire Live reported that local politicians were piling the pressure on on Social Value Housing Limited, who were connected to the housing proposal, to fulfil their promises to knock the building down. Ellesmere Port and Neston MP, Justin Madders, slated the owners for letting the property fall into disrepair.

Mr Madders said: “The site is becoming a real eyesore. It really drags the area down. If the current owners want to leave it to rot they should sell up and let someone else take over ”.

The pub, on Gleneagles Road, was once a popular meeting place for locals, but it has now stood empty for years.

Now, ward councillors, Christine Warner and Peter Wheeler, have revealed that the building will soon be demolished after new owners purchased the site. They also confirmed that a planning application would be submitted in the near future to create a Co-op store.

In an update issued to residents on the Ledsham & Manor Ward Labour Facebook page, the pair posted: "Good news at last. Your local councillors have made contact with the new owners, who bought the site at the end of May.

"They have already increased security on the site and have submitted an application to the council to demolish the building in September. This will be great news for local residents who have put up with this eyesore for years!

"The new owners are the Central England Co-operative Ltd. and they intend to submit a planning application for a Co-operative food store. More details to follow when available."
