'Eyesore' caravan torched and abandoned near tower block shut down by police

A caravan has become an "eyesore" after being torched and abandoned on a residential street.

The caravan is reported to have been set on fire around six weeks ago on Church Street in Wallasey, Wirral, and has been left there ever since. It is currently parked near to the derelict tower block Charter House, which was shut down by police and the council this week following reports of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Denis Knowles is one of many local residents who are calling for the council to remove the abandoned caravan on Church Street, which is now burnt out with smashed windows. The 72-year-old said he was walking his dog one evening in June when he noticed the caravan was on fire.

Denis said: "When I saw it, it had just started to smoulder and smoke. By the time I walked back down the road it was on fire, flames in the air and smoke everywhere.

"The fire brigade turned up, smashed all the windows, ripped the door open, which is still hanging open, and doused the fire."

Denis said the caravan has been parked in the area for around two years now, before the fire happened in June. The ECHO understands a removal notice was placed on the vehicle by Wirral Council several weeks ago, which gave the owner until July 21 to come and remove it.

However, with this date having now passed, Denis said many residents have been left wondering when the vehicle will be removed. He said: "It's not just me, a lot of people have been complaining.

"There's been an awful lot of people in the area wondering why it hasn't been removed. It's just sitting there looking like an awful eyesore."

A spokesperson for Wirral Council told the ECHO: "After being informed of this caravan the council placed a notice on it requiring its removal.

"The period for its owner to carry out the removal has now passed however, before it can be removed waste within the caravan must be taken away. A contractor will now do this and the caravan is expected to be removed early next week.”
