As we understand the winter season is here and air quality is already at alarming levels across the Delhi-NCR region. Hence, the risk of stroke is likely to double in these circumstances. The occurrence of ischaemic stroke is significantly higher in the winter season, especially when the temperature drops sharply in a cold period. In cold weather, the blood becomes thick, so the blood vessels of the brain get narrowed (spasm of arteries) and their pressure increases, leading to a risk of stroke.
Emissions by vehicles, burning fuel to heat homes, power plants and chemical production are considered as the main roots of air pollution. Traffic is a key reason for air pollution. Vehicles that burn gas release carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which are detrimental on their own. But these compounds also react with sunlight to create ozone, usually known as smog, which harms cells. Smoke from fires, including wildfires also contribute to air pollution. Prolonged exposure to such toxic air can give rise to a range of respiratory and cardiovascular problems. However some studies also suggest that long term or short term exposure to poor air quality may put you at the risk of stroke.
