A powerful explosion occurred on a container ship loaded with hazardous goods at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in China. The incident, which took place on China's Pacific coast, resulted in a fireball that engulfed containers stacked at least three high. Surveillance camera footage captured the moment of the explosion, showing a burst of white smoke followed by an orange and yellow fireball that scattered debris.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the explosion and subsequent fire. The explosion is believed to have originated from a container on the docked ship. The port, located just south of Shanghai, is one of the largest in the world.
An aerial photo released by state broadcaster CCTV displayed black smoke rising from a stack of containers on one end of the ship and from an area on the dock. Despite the damage caused by the explosion, the majority of the ship and its containers appeared to be unaffected.
The Zhejiang Province Emergency Management Administration disclosed that the ship was carrying Class 5 hazardous materials, although the specific nature of these materials was not specified. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and assessing the extent of the damage at the port.
