Explained: The 16-year-old assets case in which ex-Haryana CM OP Chautala was convicted

The story so far: Former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Om Prakash Chautala was last week convicted by a special CBI court in a disproportionate assets (DA) case. The 87-year-old was found guilty more than 16 years after the CBI first booked him in the case.

The son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, Mr. Chautala served as the Chief Minister of Haryana five times. He was first sworn in as the CM in December 1989, when he was a member of the Janata Dal. Between July 1990 and April 1991, Mr. Chautala served two brief terms as the CM. After he joined the INLD, Mr. Chautala served as the Haryana CM for two consecutive terms from July 1999 to 2005. He was earlier convicted in a teachers’ recruitment scam in 2013 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Mr. Chautala was released from Tihar jail in July last year.
