NEW DELHI: Following an uproar in Parliament over imposition of 5 per cent goods and services tax (GST) on pre-packaged and pre-labelled staple items, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday clarified that daily need items like pulses, wheat, rye, oats, maize, rice, suji, besan, puffed rice, curd/lassi when sold loose and non pre-packed or pre-labeled, will not attract any GST.
The GST Council, chaired by the Union minister, had last month unanimously decided to impose GST on some mass consumption items to simplify the rate structure, which came into effect on Monday.
