Experts issue signs of 'badly fitted windows' that bring condensation and mould

With winter now here and the colder weather having well and truly kicked in, many people are trying to keep themselves warm without putting the heating on.

And whilst people are layering up or reaching for their wearable blanket such as an oodie, or indeed their electrical blanket to keep them warm before the fall asleep, there's a number of checks people should be doing to ensure no heat is escaping from their home.

It comes as Toolstation have discussed some noises around the home and worked with an expert to reveal what the noise actually is, how much it would cost to fix and what could happen if the problem is left ignored.

One of their recommendations is that you should be listening out for a hissing from one or more of your radiators. This happens when there is water or air moving through your heating system and into the radiators around your home, with too much air sometimes becoming trapped. Unfortunately, this trapped air can stop your home from heating in parts or all together, meaning your radiator(s) need bled.

Because of this, they recommend that you bleed your radiator.

However when it comes to keep your home warm, they warn that you should also be keeping a close eye on your windows.

They refer to it as "whistling windows" which indicate that you have "poorly sealed or damaged window seals". The cost is cheap with a fix estimated to be around £5-10 for window sealants and draft excluders.

If you hear this, it's likely that you have a draught coming through badly fitted doors and windows. The experts explain: "Stopping draughts is a simple fix, but if ignored it will only get worse. Plus, as well as letting the cold air in, you’re also letting the warm air out so it’s also making your home much less energy efficient.”"
