Many households across Ireland are struggling with cost of living crisis, with the price of almost everything on the rise.
One of the most costly expenses is energy bills, with suppliers having hiked their prices throughout the year.
With people looking for ways to cut costs where possible, one expert has told of a little-known discount that she says all Electric Ireland customers can get.
The Irish consumer expert, who goes by the name @whatsgoingonireland on TikTok, suggested that Electric Ireland customers can ring up the supplier and ask for an energy saver rate that can slash 26% off bills.
She said that anyone can ring up the energy firm and ask for it, RSVP Live reports.
In a TikTok video, that has been watched over 190,000 times, she explained: “Electric Ireland are offering a reduced rate of 26% for new customers or even if you’re an existing customer but you’re out of contract with them, they will give you that 26% discount. I would certainly give them a call.”
She added in a follow-up video: “You need to ask for the electricity energy saver rate. This is a 26% saving and they can offer it to each and every one of you.”
There is one catch however, with one person asking: “Is this only if you set up a direct debit??”
The TikToker responded: “Yes but I pay weekly and then when the bill is due I owe nothing so no big bill”.
Many of her followers tried to ring up Electric Ireland and reported back with their incredible success stories using the 'secret' discount.
One commenter asked for advice after being offered a different rate by Electric Ireland, she wrote: “I was out of contract with electric Ireland and they offered me 8% to stay”.
Another person suggested just mentioning the discount as it helped them, explaining: “They offered me 18% to stay! I then mentioned the 26% discount that I had seen online so they said they could offer me that since I mentioned it.”
She added: “By the end of the call I got the discount up to 30% so try that!!”
A third commenter shared: “Same here, I checked [the] exclusive offer through bonkers with electric Ireland of 22% off, phoned them back and got 22% off direct from electric Ireland”.
