It’s something you might have wondered about when you’re putting a load of washing in - now one expert has finally explained why washing machine doors have their distinctive design.
Anyone with a front-loading washing machine will have noticed that glass in the door is shaped into a bump that protrudes inside the drum. And after social media users admitted that they had “always wondered” about the shape of the door and were “curious” about its purpose, TikTok user @renduh came to the rescue by revealing what it does.
Appliance repair technician Renae explained that there is more than one reason why washing machine doors are designed this way, the Daily Star reports . Renae answered: “The first reason, which is the main reason, is because when you have a front-load washing machine the clothes move around a lot more than they would in a top-load washing machine.

“The reason it's sloped that way is to push the clothes back into the drum while being washed,” the technician continued. “That way it doesn't get stuck in the door gasket where it might get damaged.”
Renae went on to explain that the second reason was another design feature to help clothes get washed properly. “Most front-load washing machines, in their door gasket they’re going to have some tubing that water comes into through the gasket.
“That door glass is shaped so that the water will go into the drum, instead of all collecting in the gasket and just getting stuck there,” the expert revealed. Several of Renae’s followers thanked the TikTok star for teaching them something new.
One person commented: “I have always wondered about that! Thanks for unravelling a mystery for us!”
“A fun fact I didn’t know that I didn’t know,” another quipped.
“Interesting!” A third TikTok user remarked. “The more you know…”
