Spots are no fun and there's nothing worse than waking up with a full blemish breakout.
Many people who suffer from breakouts can become self conscious, especially when they emerge on the face, making them tougher to conceal. As a result, skincare fans are no stranger to the mountain of products on the market that claim to smooth complexions.
But you may be surprised to hear that these very products could be worsening your spots. According to one expert, using too many creams, serums and moisturisers can increase bumps.
Kimberley Medd, head of the Face The Future clinic says anyone bothered by regular spots should resist the urge to lashing on the products. Instead, she recommends taking more minimalist approach to skincare with fewer treatments.
“When you're experiencing a breakout, we know that it can be tempting to layer on lots of products that promise to clear, clarify and smooth the skin. However, this could be doing your skin more harm than good and making your breakouts worse."
Skincare products are designed to help keep beauty fans tackle a number of skin problems, so of course using nothing won't keep you glowing. That said, Kimberly highlighted that overdoing it is also bad news.
She continued: "Additionally, applying too many products to blemish-prone skin can be counterproductive, as when they're overused they can cause the skin to become dry, dehydrated and irritated - leading to more breakouts."
To treat unwanted blemishes, Kimberley recommends incorporating products that contain Salicylic and Glycolic Acid, which gently reduce the formation of acne, clogged pores and excess sebum.
The specialist has also shared another warning sign to look out for that indicates too many steps in your skincare routine. If your skin feels dry and tight, its a big red flag that your products are sucking your skin of essential moisture.
Dehydration can really impact skin health, causing fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. To combat this, Kimberly says cleaners with neutral ingredients are best.
She added: "If your skin feels tight after cleansing, look for cleansers that are pH balanced and contain gentle, yet effective ingredients that leave the skin feeling balanced and comfy."
