Expert shares how to cut Council Tax costs with common error and discounts

An expert has shared how to save money on your Council Tax bill.

Claer Barrett was back on Lorraine, alongside the Scottish ITV host, with some need to know money tips. Today's main topic was how to knock money off your Council Tax bill.

It comes as households will face a significant increase in their Council Tax bill this year. Three quarters of English councils with social care duties are planning a 5% hike, according to the County Councils Network (CCN).

Claer said: "Now is a really good time to look and see if you are eligible for a saving. There are two main ways, if you're a fan of Martin Lewis, and I think everybody is, he detailed how half a million people could be in the wrong valuation band for their Council Tax so that's one way to save.

"The second way I want to highlight is the array of Council Tax discounts that many people don't realise they're eligible for and also don't realise that they're not applied automatically. Councils don't connect all of the dots, you have to wave your hand and tell them.

"If you're on a low income that's a really obvious one. Single person discount is 25% off and students get 100% off. People who have a live in carer or disability and suffering from a serious mental illness, stroke or dementia - these are all things that could entitle you to a discount."

You can apply for a Council Tax discount by visiting the gov.uk website here and putting in your postcode. It will then take you through to your local council's website where you can find more information on how to apply and who is eligible.
