Expert says we've been putting bras on wrong for years as 'falling in' technique is best

Each day it seems we're being told by an expert that there's yet another seemingly mundane task we've been doing wrong - from tweezing our eyebrows to ordering steak.

And now another big mistake has been added to this list of things and ladies, it will likely blow your mind.

According to a bra fitting expert, many of us have been putting our bras on incorrectly each morning and in the process, we might have damaged them.

Mercie Smith, the Assistant Manager at Bravissimo's Oxford Circus branch, shared her top bra tips with The Mirror explaining the 'best' way to put on a bra in order to get the most wear and life out of it.

The expert shared how it's common to put your bra on backward, doing the hooks up around the front and then swivelling the bra around your body.

You would then flip the cups upright to cover your breasts, before pulling the straps up over your arms to your shoulders.

However, doing this is more likely to ruin your bra and cause damage to the underwires.

Instead, you should try the 'falling in' or 'falling forward' technique which is more likely to extend the lifetime of your favourite bras.

"The best way to put your bra on is to fall forward into the cups and do the back up around your back on the loosest hook. Then put your shoulder straps up and adjust yourself in your cups," Mercie said.

"But most women will start off at the front and swivel the bra around which is not the best way to put on a bra. This can distort the wire in the bra and change its shape."

She went on to explain that damaging the wire is bad for two reasons, firstly because it won't help the bra give you the support you need, and secondly because it can eventually cause the wire to come out the side of the bra.

When doing your bra up, Mercie says you should always start with the loosest hooks on the back and over time, work your way in as needed when the bra stretches due to washing and wearing.

The bra band should sit nice and straight across the middle of your back, while the straps should not be too tight but also not so loose they are falling off your shoulders, with the adjusters ideally sitting halfway between the band and your shoulders.

If you're unsure about your fit or think you might need a different size, be sure to book yourself in for a fitting with an expert so you can feel comfortable and confident.
