Expert reveals how £1 product can prevent hay fever symptoms

With hay fever season in full swing, high pollen counts are affecting millions across the UK. Symptoms like itchy eyes, nose, and throat are something that many people put up with for the summer, but according to experts, this does not need to happen.

While some people will welcome the warmer weather, for others the warm temperature will wreak havoc with their hay fever symptoms. Rising temperatures may cause tree pollen levels to spike across the UK.

A hay fever expert has revealed which common product can drastically reduce - or even cure - hay fever symptoms in children and adults. And the bonus is that it costs just £1.

Professor Adam Fox is a paediatric allergist. He has put together a list of things that hay fever sufferers can do to reduce symptoms, including recommending Vaseline.

When applied around the nostrils, Vaseline can create a protective barrier which physically stops the pollen from entering the nasal passage. As the pollen cannot reach the nasal passage, the allergic reaction does not happen.

While it is not a perfect remedy, Vaseline is a tried and tested method which has been proven to reduce symptoms. It is even recommended by the NHS as a hay fever remedy. Other remedies recommended by Professor Fox include:

  • Keep windows closed, especially when sleeping
  • Avoid drying your clean laundry outside - this could mean that pollen becomes attached to the clothes
  • Shower and wash your hair more often - pollen could be trapped in your hair or on your body
  • Wash pillowcases more often
  • Avoid being outside in the early morning and evening - as pollen count is highest then
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Holiday near the seaside and not in the countryside - pollen is higher further from the coast
  • Use a nasal douche to wash out pollen
  • Vacuum regularly
