Expert advice on making mulled wine - with a bottle of white

Although red tends to be the drink of choice for making mulled wine, a bottle of fruity, medium-sweet White Wine such as a Riesling or Chenin makes for an unusual, sweeter version of this popular festive tipple, according to experts. Majestic experts suggest Kendermanns Riesling Kabinett (£6.99 Mix Six, £9.99 per bottle) or Acacia Road Chenin Blanc (£5.99 Mix Six, £7.99 per bottle) for the ultimate Mulled White Wine, but the drink can also be switched up based on your favourite wine of choice down.

The difference when it comes to White Wine is that it can become very easily overwhelmed by strong spices, unlike Red. Opting for lighter fruits such as oranges can help to keep the flavours of the drink, whilst retaining the fragrant festive flavours.

Elizabeth Kelly, Master of Wine and Wine Buyer at Majestic, said: “Switching up your Mulled Wine base makes for a fun surprise this festive season and is bound to delight guests at any Christmas gathering - whether they prefer it to the traditional Red version or not. Making sure to pick the perfect White Wine bottle - one with notes of stone fruits and sweet flavours - helps balance the warming Christmas drink best.”

If traditional is more your style, Les Frères Lumière Côtes du Rhône (£6.49 Mix Six, £7.49 per bottle) is Majestic’s top pick for the perfect Red Mulled Wine.

Or, if it’s ease and convenience you’re after, then Majestic has you covered with its very own Mulled option (£4.99 Mix Six/£5.99 per bottle).
