EXCLUSIVE: Mason Holgate reveals Everton dressing room reaction to fan campaign

Mason Holgate has urged his Everton teammates not to rest on their laurels after secured a strong victory against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues secured their first Premier League away win since August thanks to a brilliant strike from Vitalii Mykolenko and a header from Holgate, with Patson Daka scoring in between those two strikes in the first half. Those three points lifted Frank Lampard's side above both Burnley and Leeds United and out of the relegation zone with four games left of the season.

The match was again dominated by an incredible atmosphere created by Everton fans, who were in full voice throughout the 90 minutes and even stayed in their seats singing together long after the full time whistle had sounded. This followed huge numbers of supporters lining the streets outside Finch Farm to see the team coaches off to the match, as part of a fan campaign that started ahead of the Chelsea game.

Holgate missed that aspect of the weekend through illness, but praised the fans for banding together and showing off the size of the club.

Summing up the mood in the dressing room right now, he told the ECHO: "I met the lads later but I've seen the videos and obviously it's such a big boost for all of us. It kind of shows which direction we're all going in together as a club.

"We've all galvanised together. Listen, the circumstances aren't ideal and it's not where we want to be, there's no hiding from that. But nothing we do can change that now, we're in where we are and we've just got to dig deep.

"It's something you can replace and it shows the size of the club. I'm under no illusion of how big the club is, but it's all about staying together now until the very end."

Everton now have another away trip close on the horizon as they prepare to travel to Watford on Wednesday evening. Roy Hodgson's side had their relegation from the Premier League confirmed at the weekend with a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

However well the weekend has gone for the Blues though, Holgate knows that the job is far from over. And, he's determined for himself and his teammates to continue in the same style that they have set for themselves in recent weeks.

"We can't get carried away because a couple of results have gone our way, and that starts again on Wednesday. We can't look too far ahead, or look behind us," the defender added.

"Once Wednesday has gone, win lose or draw we've got to go again. And that's going to be it until the end of the season now, Putting everything in, 100%, working as a team, defending and just trying to nick goals.

"We can't take our foot off the gas and think we're safe now because we're not. We've got to keep going. We're all fighting, everybody's together now. But ultimately, we've got to keep winning games and take each one as it comes.

"We're all working together as a team and working really hard, but like I said that's [Sunday's game] gone now. There's another game on Wednesday for us to go again."

Holgate bagged another goal under Lampard having already bagged against West Ham in the league and Brentford in the FA Cup since the arrival of the manager at Goodison Park. And while he's happy to be contributing, he knows it's a team effort.

He added: "It's just nice to be chipping in and helping any way I can. A couple have fell to me which is a bit of a change!

"I'm more than happy to be helping, but it's not just the goals, for the rest of the game we all dug together as a team and defended well. That's what it's going to be about now.

"It's not going to be always so pretty, but it's all about getting points on the board now and that's what we'll hopefully keep doing. We keep going one game at a time."
