Exclusive Interview With Ukrainian President Zelensky Reveals Ongoing Struggle

Chinese Foreign Ministry news briefing on Chinese President Xi's call with Ukrainian President Zelensky, in Beijing

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently sat down for an exclusive interview near the front lines of the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky highlighted the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people in the face of adversity, noting that significant progress has been made in reclaiming territory previously occupied by Russian forces.

Despite facing challenges such as a lack of certain weapons and Russian air and manpower superiority, Zelensky emphasized the importance of continued support from international partners, particularly the United States and the EU, in countering Russian aggression.

Zelensky acknowledged the significant human cost of the conflict, with tens of thousands of Ukrainians killed and many more displaced. He also provided insights into the casualties on the Russian side, estimating a ratio of one Ukrainian soldier to five Russian soldiers killed in action.

Regarding the military strategy, Zelensky discussed recent changes in leadership within the Ukrainian armed forces, emphasizing the need for agility and efficiency in decision-making to effectively combat Russian forces.

Looking ahead to 2024, Zelensky outlined the strategic priorities for Ukraine, including defending key regions, preparing for new counter-offensives, and leveraging advanced weapons systems received from international allies.

Addressing concerns about the timing of military aid from the U.S., Zelensky stressed the importance of receiving high-range weapons to level the playing field against Russian artillery with superior reach.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Zelensky remained resolute in his commitment to defending Ukrainian sovereignty and expressed readiness to negotiate a resolution that would allow Ukraine to retain control over 80% of its territory while potentially ceding some areas in exchange for EU and NATO membership.

The interview provided valuable insights into the current state of the conflict and Ukraine's strategic priorities moving forward, underscoring the critical role of international support in ensuring the country's security and stability.
