Exciting young exile could be Wales Six Nations bolter after sending strong try-scoring message to Gatland

He is still an L-plater in rugby terms, having started just 13 games of senior rugby for his club.

And Dafydd Jenkins is only 20. But the Exeter Chiefs youngster can play.

Wayne Pivac handed him a Wales debut against Georgia in November, and if that result for the team didn’t go well on that occasion, there’s a feeling Jenkins will have plenty more opportunities in a red jersey.

His latest eye-catching show came for his the Chiefs in their Heineken Champions Cup clash with the Bulls in Pretoria.

Jenkins was up against two excellent locks in Ruan Nortje and Ruan Vermaak but still caught the eye in a losing cause, scoring a try that earned his club what may yet prove a valuable bonus point.

The Porthcawl Comprehensive School product was good on both sides of the ball. There were 19 metres made by him from seven carries and he also put in nine tackles, sent out a number of passes and took lineout ball for his team.

It was a strong performance at altitude from a player who’s pushing hard to make Warren Gatland’s Wales Six Nations squad.

Adam Beard, Alun Wyn Jones, Rhys Davies, Seb Davies and Ben Carter are also in the mix, with Christ Tshiunza potentially being seen as a hybrid player.

The question for Gatland is whether he believes Jenkins is ready. So far in his short senior career he has handled every challenge he has been faced.

He has mature beyond his years, takes responsibility and is developing with every match.

It would be a statement to include him in the squad on Tuesday. And not one that many would argue over.
