Rio Ferdinand has predicted that Newcastle United will do 'big business' in the summer after the former Manchester United captain took note of the owners' 'more meticulous' approach.
The hierarchy did not intend to spend heavily in the mid-season window, initially, but Newcastle's perilous position in the table meant that reinforcements were sorely needed.
Newcastle have so far splashed out £37m on Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, and the club remain hopeful of making further additions before the window closes on Monday.

However, it is likely that Newcastle will spend more in the summer, when clubs are more open to selling players, and part-owner Amanda Staveley has admitted, herself, that 'the best window is always the summer'.
Ferdinand, who once infamously said that Newcastle supporters should 'thank' former owner Mike Ashley, has been among those watching on from afar and the England great hopes the 'big club' stay up after paying tribute to the Magpies' 'absolutely loyal' and 'crazy fanbase'.
"I think Newcastle will stay up," he said during the latest episode of Vibe with FIVE. "I think Newcastle will then do big business in the summer. I think they will go big in the summer.
"You know what I like? People are going, 'Oh they should spend more. They should do this' and then people will go, 'Oh, it's only because they've got money' and they beat them with that stick.
"But they're doing it the other way, a more meticulous [approach], and, hopefully, in their mind, they're doing it probably more strategically and not as gung-ho as maybe other teams when they've had money straight away have just gone bananas and you go, 'Wow. What the hell is that circus?'"
