Excitement in Long Eaton as Lego store set to fill empty unit

Shoppers in a town on the Nottinghamshire border have shared their excitement as a new Lego resale store is set to open. BarnDawg has taken up an empty unit on Market Place in Long Eaton.

Building work has started on the Lego resale store. It is not yet known when it will open.

People in the town welcomed the news about the new shop - as the high street has lost a number of stores in recent months. Carol Flet, 33, from Sandiacre, said: "I'm excited for it.

"I want Harry Potter, Star Wars - I don't have loads at home. I'm quite excited.

"Hopefully it will bring more people to come into town. It's sad seeing all the empty shops.

"Having a shop filled with something that I'm interested in, I think it's great. Shops come and go quite often.

"It can be for all ages. Anyone can enjoy Lego.”

Last year, residents called for Long Eaton to get its originality and buzz back after a loss of shops on the high street. Businesses such as New Look, Shoe Zone, Kim's Handmade Gift Shop, Pete’s Upper Crust Cafe have all left empty units in the town.

Carol's mum, 57-year-old Jackie Flet, added: "A lot of people have been saying they can't wait (for the new Lego shop). I've got a niece and she loves anything Lego.

"We have charity shops and cafes, Long Eaton is the place for that. It is something different."

BarnDawg describes itself as a 'hub' where old Lego can find a new home. It offers a 25% discount to anyone who wants to drop off old Lego pieces that they have lying around or aren't using.

Long Eaton resident Barney Collier, 51, said: "It's nice to see a unit being filled. I don't think it will impact me much.

"It's nice. I think it's a step in the right direction.

"With this place it's struggling, only food retail seems to be alright." Another resident added: "There's a lot of empty shops here - it’s not as busy as it used to be.

"At the moment a Sunday seems to be busier than a Saturday. It's something different for the town."
