Excitement as 'refurbishment' sign placed outside closed Nottingham pub

Neighbours on the border of Aspley and Old Basford have reminisced about an old pub in the area that has been closed for several years. The Newcastle Arms in Nuthall Road closed several years ago, and owners Star Pubs and Bars have placed a sign outside advertising that the pub is available to lease, and that a refurbishment is planned.

People in the area said the pub has had many different owners over the years and they'd like it to reopen. Retired Stephan Mann, 60, who lives in Old Basford, said: “I used to drink here all the time.

“It started off as a good pub and then it just went through so many different owners it was hard to keep track but it could be a good pub again if it’s done-up correctly.”

Stephan has lived in the area for around 30 years. He continued: “I go to The Whitemoor sometimes but I usually drink at home. The Newcastle Arms is closer so, if it reopened, I’d definitely drink there again.”

The pub is believed to have been built in 1930. Last year, it was reported the amount of pubs demolished in Nottinghamshire was ‘worrying.’

Carl Rapley, 78, who is retired and lives in Old Basford, said: “It should have reopened long ago. I know there’s a crisis and people are skint but this pub used to have people coming in and out until closing time. There’s no doubt in my mind people would go in again if it was to reopen.”

Carl added: “The prices were cheap there. If it was to open, I’m sure that would change.”

Paris Baker, 32, who lives in Aspley, added: “This has always been a pub, I can’t remember much about it but it’s been there forever.

“I think people in the area would like to see the pub reopened, there’s a big population of older people around here who are now retired so it’ll be somewhere for them to go - not necessarily to drink but to have a chat and something to eat.”

Anna Harriot, 28, lives in Whitemoor. She said: “There aren’t that many pubs in the area and I think it’s always a good thing to support your local area instead of going to the city centre or elsewhere.”

The nurse continued: “I’ve only lived in the area for 4 years and I’ve only ever seen it closed so if it was to open in the next few years, I would go in.”
