Exact date 'heavy snow' to hit Leeds next week as BBC Weather issues warning

Leeds, like most of Yorkshire, is set for a temperature drop next week - along with some January snowfall. The city will see some heavy snow showers and sleet throughout the week, so you may want to dig out your thermals.

Snow will arrive in Leeds on Tuesday, with light snow showers arriving at 6am. These will turn heavy towards the afternoon and will continue until around 6pm, along with a moderate breeze.

Thursday will be sleet showers and a moderate breeze, with sleet coming in from 8am and lasting until lunchtime. There will then be some light rain in the evening. The weekend will not be snowy though, with just some showers on Sunday.

Met Office forecaster, Aidan McGivern, has said that a jet stream coming to the UK from the northwest has brought with it the chilly weather that we can expect next week. In Leeds, temperatures will hit lows of 3°, with a 'feels like' temperature of -1°.

Aidan McGivern said: "Next week, the jet stream is a bit more amplified and it’s coming at the UK from the northwest rather than from the west like recent days.

"This subtle change into the start of next week will see colder weather coming in and rather than prolonged bouts of rain from the west, we’re likely to see rain and showers coming from the northwest.

"These showers from the north could fall as snow over the high parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland later in the weekend, and as we move through next week often below average temperatures could support a mixture of rain, hail sleet and snow. Most of any snow accumulation is likely over higher parts of the northern UK.

“However, at this point significant differences in the computer models emerge. Most solutions lead to some unsettled weather, but the distribution of the rainfall and where we’re likely to see any snow varies as well. On Tuesday next week, the greatest risk of snow will be across northern parts of the UK, perhaps central areas and mostly over the hills."
