Exact date face mask law will end in Scotland as Nicola Sturgeon confirms change

Scotland is set to axe face masks laws from next month.

The First Minister announced the change during her update in Scottish Parliament earlier today.

It means that from March 21 - as long as no spike in Covid cases is detected - face coverings will no longer be legally required.

Under Scotland's current rules, you are expected to wear face coverings when in shops, using public transport, or moving around in a pub or restaurant.

The rules have been in place since 2020 with Scots continuing to wear face coverings despite laws in England being scrapped last month.

Key end dates in Scotland

February 28

  • The Covid vaccine passport scheme will end; app will still be available
  • Face mask rules for secondary school pupils will end

March 21

  • The legal requirement to wear face coverings in certain indoor settings and public transport will end
  • The legal requirement for businesses and service providers to retain customer contact details will also end

Face covering requirements are part of Scotland's 'baseline' Covid measures.

It was earlier announced that face mask rules for secondary school pupils will end from February 28.

The First Minister also announced an end to Scotland's covid vaccine passport scheme from Monday.

However, despite face coverings no longer legally required from next month, Nicola Sturgeon stated that Scots will be urged to continue wearing masks when in public.

In the update this afternoon, Nicola Sturgeon said: "As of March 21 - assuming no significant adverse developments in the course of the virus - we expect that the legal requirement to wear face coverings in certain indoor settings and on public transport will be converted to guidance.

"However, we will continue to strongly recommend the wearing of face coverings in shops and other indoor public places, and on public transport.

"We also expect on March 21 to lift the legal requirement for businesses, places of worship and service providers to have regard to Scottish government guidance on covid, and to take reasonably practicable measures set out in the guidance. "
