Ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino makes England manager job claim amid Gareth Southgate call

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he would be 'open' to succeeding Gareth Southgate as England manager when the Three Lions boss leaves his role.

The admission comes just days before England open their World Cup campaign with a match against Iran and Pochettino will be travelling to Qatar to keep a close eye on proceedings. The Argentine, who left his role as PSG manager in the summer, made the admission having been at Wembley for England's final match before the World Cup, against Germany in September.

The claims are interesting given their timing and will not be welcomed by Southgate, with the Three Lions boss having a contract to see him through until the summer of 2024. Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has also expressed an willingness manage the Three Lions, meaning that should England fail to live up to expectations then a new coach could be ready and waiting to take the role.

Pochettino has previously worked with FA Technical Director John McDermott during his time at Tottenham Hotspur and in and interview with The Athletic, Pochettino admitted his willingness to consider the England job. He explained: “Of course, my relationship with England has always been very good. We have a very good relationship with the academies, trying to develop young players for the national team.

“I feel so comfortable here. You never know what happens. I am open to everything.”. Pochettino is reported to have recently turned down the chance to manage Aston Villa, with the Midlands club opting for Unai Emery instead, but should the England job arise it could be an offer which is too good to turn down.

Pochettino built a strong squad at Tottenham throughout his five years at the club, although they ultimately fell short in big moments, losing in the Champions League final to Liverpool in his last season
