Ex-Tottenham boss backs Leeds United to clinch Premier League survival with final day win over Spurs

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has backed Leeds United to beat Spurs at Elland Road on the final day of the season to stay in the Premier League.

Sitting above 18th placed Nottingham Forest on goal difference alone, Leeds have Man City, Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham left to play this term. The results in those games will define whether or not the Whites maintain their top-flight status in the 2023/24 season.

Although they are not the easiest fixtures on paper, Sherwood believes that Sam Allardyce's side can reach safety against his old side on May 28, with former Leeds manager Simon Grayson also pointing to the same fixture as the one that could define the season for the Whites.

"I think they have the best person to keep them up,” Grayson told William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football. "If they stuck with Javi Gracia they’d have had no chance. Where do they go and get another manager that knows the Premier League? I think they’ll stay up by the skin of their teeth, I’m so hopeful they do.

"I’m not sure where the points will come from, but I think it could come down to their last fixture against Tottenham at Elland Road. I don’t know which Tottenham team will turn up, the good one, the average one or the poor one, I just hope it’s the really poor one and Leeds beat them on the last game of the season."

Sherwood echoed Grayson’s sentiment, adding: "Leeds need to hope that Tottenham have nothing to play for on the final day. I don’t think it’s a great ground for Tottenham I really don’t. I agree that it goes to the last game of the season, and I think with the structure Sam puts in place and the emotion of the crowd, managed by the players, I think they will beat Tottenham on the last game of the season to stay in the Premier League."
