Former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel has claimed that Chelsea star Mason Mount has been a "scapegoat" for England fans amid criticism of his performances for the nation. It comes after the midfielder was part of a 0-0 draw for the Three Lions in their second group game against USA.
Gareth Southgate's men struggled to break down the opposition at times, with the press of the US causing plenty of problems for the midfield. It leaves them with work to do in the final clash against Wales to secure a place in the round of 16 and top the group.
"The objective is to qualify," Southgate told reporters in defence of his team after the clash. "We have three games to do it. I would imagine most of the teams in the competition will take three games to do it. We have to stay calm in these tournaments. We've been through this before."

While the whole team struggled, Chelsea star Mount was, perhaps unfairly, in the firing line for criticism over his performance and inability to create chances. It's led USMNT legend and former Tottenham shot-stopper, Friedel, to say his piece on the discussion surrounding the 23-year-old.
He told Online Casino: "I think criticism of Mount after one match is unfair. Everyone can have a bad performance, and he's been made a scapegoat a bit which isn't right. Going individually into one man's display isn't right. Looking into [USA duo] Tyler Adams and Yunus Musah would be a better idea as they were fantastic, and they deserve more praise.
"If Mount continues to have underwhelming performances, then criticism is warranted, but you can't pick him out individually for one poor game. Mount came up against players who are really physical."
It remains to be seen if the midfielder will retain his place when England face Wales on Tuesday, but with a result needed, there could be a response on the cards.
