Ex-top civil servant Sir Chris Wormald starts new job following £860k pay-off

  • Sir Chris Wormald has officially taken his seat in the House of Lords as an independent crossbench peer, completing his introduction ceremony on Thursday morning.
  • The former civil service chief stepped down as Cabinet secretary in February after a 14-month tenure, following a mutual decision reached with prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.
  • Annual accounts published by the Cabinet Office revealed that Lord Wormald was granted a record severance package of £859,496 upon his departure.
  • His exit followed anonymous briefings from Downing Street insiders criticising his leadership, which former Cabinet secretary Lord O’Donnell subsequently condemned as shabby.
  • Lord Wormald was introduced alongside five other new peers taking their seats in the upper chamber this week, including former judge Sir Brian Leveson.
