Ex-Sunderland star hails Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt's work ethic amid Black Cats chances

Former Sunderland centre-back Danny Collins has praised Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt's work ethic after the 20-year-old's start to life under Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray.

Gelhardt appears to be the club's only out-and-out striker for the foreseeable future after regular starter Ross Stewart went down with a serious injury a few weeks ago but has started to adapt well to his new surroundings.

Whilst he's still without a goal in the three matches he's played for the Black Cats so far, he has come close, striking the side-netting and the crossbar against Queens Park Rangers earlier this week.

"Tony may be thinking Joe needs a little bit more help in and around him," Collins told Sunderland's YouTube channel after the win over QPR. But you look at him tonight he did have a couple of opportunities. I just like his work rate overall, he certainly never gives the centre-halves a moment’s breath on the ball."

Gelhardt is likely to be given another nod in the starting line-up from Mowbray when Sunderland play host to Bristol City on Saturday afternoon.
