Olympic running legend Liz McColgan has suffered a horror fall while out running.
The Dundee athlete shattered her collarbone after the terrifying incident during a training run.
The 57-year-old, who is now based in Doha, needed emergency surgery to repair the damage she described as 'more complicated than first thought'.
Writing on Twitter, Liz - who was known for her toughness on the road and track - described the tumble as a ‘freaky fall’.
She wrote: “Road to recovery starts today.
“After a really freaky fall from jogging I broke my clavical [sic] from the shoulder bone so need surgery to repair.
“Thought these injuries were behind me since I retired! Hopefully speedy recovery.”
McColgan later gave an update to her nearly 10,000 followers.
She said: “Typical me surgery ended up being more complicated than 1st thought more fractures to the bone that X-ray did not show so fixed a plate to bone and screws but could not stabilize completely so taped the bone as well seemingly works well (never heard of that) longer recovery back.”
Andy Murray’s mum, Judy, wished the double Commonwealth gold medallist well.
She said: “Ur invincible Liz!!! I’d bet my house on you making a full recovery.”
McColgan is from the Whitfield area of Dundeeand started running aged 12 with Hawkhill Harriers.
She won gold in the 10,000m at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and retained the title at the 1990 games in Auckland.
She also won silver in the same event at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, and gold at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo.
Brendan Foster at the time described her stunning run as the “greatest-ever performance by a British distance runner, man or woman”.
She won the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year in 1991 and a foot fracture forced her to retire from running in 2001.
Her daughter Eilish is now a successful runner too, having also competed in the Olympics.
