A prominent New Zealand rugby player, Shane Christie, who had been a vocal advocate for closer study into the connections between concussion and long-term brain injury, has died at the age of 39.

Christie, who played for the Highlanders in Super Rugby and represented New Zealand Maori, was found dead at his Nelson home early on Wednesday morning after police were called to the address.
