Ex-Rangers defender Filip Helander set for new Odense deal after injury recovery

Former Rangers crock Filip Helander has been offered a new deal at Danish club Odense just months after he feared for his career.

And Odense football director, Bjorn Wesstrom, has revealed he would hand him a five-year deal if he would accept it.

The Swedish international left Rangers on a free transfer in the summer after missing almost all of the last two seasons at the club with injury - including a Europa League and Scottish Cup Final.

The 30-year-old admitted he worried about whether he would ever return to the pitch following his injury-ravaged time in Glasgow.

But he's impressed hugely at Odense and they are set to offer him a new deal, with Helander only initially handed a one-year contract.

Wesstrom said: "We are happy that Filip is here. We will make the best of it and then we will see if we can find a contract for him that is longer than the agreement we have now.

"We absolutely must investigate that possibility.

"It's very clear that if I had to decide, we would sign a five-year contract with Filip Helander. But I don't think he's that interested in that."

Helander made just 35 league starts for Rangers after a £3.5 million move from Bologna four years ago and netted an Old Firm winner in a 1-0 victory in August 2021.
