Former Celtic gaffer Tony Mowbray is currently the main man at the Stadium of Light as he bids to take the Black Cats back to the riches of the English Premier League. They've had a stumble of late with just one win in three games and sit ninth and four points off the pace for the play-off places.

The same report states Oxford have NOT made a formal approach to speak to Murty at this stage but the English Championship would unlikely block his departure if he was offered the role and expressed an interest in taking it.

During his playing career the 48-year-old turned out for the likes of York City, Reading, Charlton Ahtletic and Southampton. He was also capped for Scotland.

As well as Rangers, he's had experience of working with the youth academies at Norwich and St Mary's.
